Personality:
Representing the Triforce of Courage, Link's defining characteristic is his... well, courage. His comfortable and humble existence in Skyloft is abruptly interrupted when Zelda falls to the Surface world, and Link takes on the responsibility of going after her without missing a beat. To rescue his friend and to save the world from utter chaos, the hero of legend embarks on his journey to the land beneath the clouds- something that no living citizen of Skyloft has ever done- and manages to overcome terrific tasks that demand a great amount of courage from him to do so.

Although he knows very little about his destiny at the beginning of his journey, he accepts it without a single complaint. Link cares deeply about his relationship with Zelda, to the point where- clearly- he would do anything for her. His actions as the hero, his determination, his loyalty to those he considers his friends, and his ambition defines him as a person and as one who truly embodies the Triforce of Courage. Undoubtedly, Link makes an effort to put his all into everything he does, especially when it comes to fulfilling his destiny as the hero or taking care of those nearest to his heart.

Being a student at the Knight Academy, Link has always managed to keep himself fairly agile and fit. Knight Academy students are, for whatever reason, taught how to swordfight, and Link in particular managed to handle his sword with a particular talent, even before receiving the Goddess's blade. He's a rather athletic boy, a talented swordsman, and he's always been surprisingly quick when it comes to mastering new skills like learning how to strum a lyre in about a minute.

Despite his commendable knack for quickly picking up skills- like how to use a bow and arrow or complicated moves on his Loftwing- there is a certain aloofness about the young hero which sometimes translates as dimwittedness. Link is brave, handy with a sword and all that, but he's nowhere near the brightest person you'll ever meet. To be frank, Link can be a bit dumb at times. Growing up on a sparsely populated island resulted in a rather sheltered and humble upbringing, and Link seems to know very little outside of what he's picked up at the Knight Academy. Throughout his adventures, the hero found himself consulting with his guide, Fi, for things she seemed to think were obvious.

Before the Wing Ceremony, Zelda quips that she wouldn't have been surprised if Link actually slept through the ceremony. Even though he totally saved the world, Link can be a little lazy. He's certainly slept through his fair share of classes and slacked off on homework or simple tasks given to him by other Skyloftians.

Overall, though, Link's a good kid. He has a kind heart and a fairly likeable nature. While he's not the best conversationalist, he's very friendly and likes the company of others. Without any living family members, Link values his friendships as deeply as he would a familial relationship. Even Groose- who acted like an antagonist for the majority of Link's life- still means quite a bit to the hero. It's in Link's best interest to be a loyal friend; he's usually willing to go the extra mile for someone close to his heart, even if it's just to make them puke up a gratitude crystal smile.

Link does have a tendency to be a bit awkward in social situations, though. He's quiet and usually prefers to get his point across through physical gestures or one-word answers than carrying out any lengthy conversations. This makes him a pretty crappy conversationalist and absolutely horrid at small talk.

He also has very little consideration for personal space. He doesn't seem to mind inviting himself into other people's houses or rooms without knocking and looking over their things. As someone who gravitates to physical communication over verbal, he also doesn't consider that others might not appreciate being touched if he's trying to communicate with them or get their attention.

Backstory:
Once- a very long time ago- the earth opened up and released dark forces, lead by the Demon King Demise, that brought despair to the Surface and those that lived there. All in order to take a great power (in the form of the Triforce) from the goddess. The Triforce granted the holder the power to make any desire a reality; something so powerful, that only the goddess could have been trusted with it.

Her Grace, the goddess, protected the Triforce and the surviving humans by gathering them on a piece of the earth which was sent skyward, far from the evil overwhelming the land below. The goddess fought alongside the remaining creatures on earth in order to seal away the dark forces and protect what was left of the Surface. The land in the sky remained where it was, keeping the humans and the Triforce safe above the clouds, even after the land below had returned to peace. The largest of the floating islands was called Skyloft, and the humans lived there comfortably for many generations, regarding whatever existed beyond the clouds to be a dark or evil place.

Not quite so long ago, the Demon Lord Ghirahim (who somehow managed to avoid being sealed away with Demise) attempted to kidnap a young lady from the annual Wing Ceremony held by Skyloft's Knight Academy. Summoning a dark tornado near Skyloft, Ghirahim successfully managed to pull her to the Surface.

But let's back up a smidge first. A little over a decade and a half before Ghirahim pulled his little stunt, a fair-haired boy named Link was born in Skyloft. His parents passed away (one soon after the other) when he was very young, and subsequently Link ended up raising himself. Although it wasn't without help from the tight-knit community of people who lived on Skyloft.

Just like almost every kid in Skyloft, Link enrolled at the Knight Academy as soon as he was able to. It was there that Link learned to decently handle a sword, fly his Loftwing, and where he met Zelda. Link made friends at the Knight Academy, but Zelda was his best friend. And the girl who had fallen to the surface during the Wing Ceremony.

Ultimately, that incident lead to the events of Skyward Sword. Or rather, Link skydiving after her and saving the world.

Zelda was the living embodiment of the goddess Hylia. Link was the fabled hero of legend, the only one who could wield the Goddess Sword. Ghirahim was able to resurrect his master, Demise, but Link wasted no time sealing the Demon Lord within the Master Sword and allowing peace to return to the Surface again. The pair made the decision to stay together on the Surface. To feel solid ground beneath their feet, see the clouds above their heads, and watch over the Triforce.

Not without visits to their friends and family back in Skyloft, though. Usually the two of them were able to travel between the land an sky with relative ease. However, Link did find himself dragged into a tornado and directed off course one afternoon while flying back from Skyloft on his own. Unable to regain his composure in time, Link and his Loftwing crash landed in an incredibly foreign land below the clouds.

Upon finding Zelda's name on the list of students at the local academy, Link made the reckless decision to enroll alongside her. At the time, the boy didn't know this wasn't the Zelda he knew, but he was assured by a pair of hands that he had made the right decision.

Anything Else?:
△ Link's Crimson Loftwing is coming with him, of course. Her name is Epona.
△ Although he had to return the Master Sword, Link does carry a sword with him. Most of the time.
△ Still dresses in his knight's uniform.
△ He's taken up the art of woodwork and he's been mildly interested in archaeology thanks to Gorko's influence.

[A video post; what a surprise. Link inspects his computer screen with a very serious expression for a few moments. He fumbles around with the laptop, feeling around for what he'd been told was called the microphone. There's a loud static-y sound as his fingers pass over it, and he seems thoroughly pleased with himself for finding the elusive mic.

He straightens his posture, then lifts what appears to be a birthday cake into view. It's a pretty sad looking cake; the frosting is dripping off the sides, and the whole cake seems a little lopsided. Someone left it out in the rain.

Link has a staring contest with whoever's watching the video for a few seconds. Still holding the cake. He blinks, then speaks. He's a little soft-spoken, but he leans in towards the microphone to make sure his voice is picked up.]

I found this outside, just a few minutes ago.

[An extended pause...]

If this is yours, you're welcome to come pick it up.

[And that's it. Link sets the cake down- assumedly beside the laptop- and turns the video feed off. Come and claim your miserable-looking cake.]
